Dr. Ivor Dent was a teacher and assistant principal in Edmonton Public Schools before entering civic politics. He was an alderman for five years, then served as mayor of Edmonton from 1968 to 1974. In addition, he is credited with bringing both the LRT and Commonwealth Games to Edmonton.
Ivor Dent lived his life as a learner and a leader. He obtained his B. Ed. and M.Ed. from the University of Alberta, and Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Oregon. He also studied at Oxford University after his time as mayor. He retired from the field of education as principal of Rundle School in 1980. He was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1984.
